When Bea refused to marry Pete Braga, she made a permanent enemy. She knew that at the time, but what could she do? Pete had lied to her, he hadn't changed as he had promised, and she knew that she couldn't go through with the wedding. Back at home, Pete wouldn't speak to Bea for months. If they happened to bump into each other in the street each would turn the other way. Eventually, Pete did come by the Marina for a scotch. He had no choice. It was the only decent place to get a drink in town. They would exchange the most begrudging of hellos.

Lately, Bea and Pete's relationship has improved somewhat. They still don't like each other, but she feels able to complain to Pete about what is happening in Paradise Falls. And what is happening is not good. The entire infrastructure seems to have been laid to waste. The pavements are cracked. The garbage pickup is erratic. The walls are literally crumbling at the Town Hall.

She is a proud woman, perhaps too proud. She has always been a tad sanctimonious, but she is correct about her beloved town: If you don't respect something, you don't take care of it. And Pete doesn't respect Paradise Falls.
