cast & crew: paradise falls

Julie Brown, "Mimi Van Lux"
Known for her outrageous comedy performances and songs, award-winning Actress/Singer/Writer/Director/Producer/Gay Icon Julie Brown's star-turn role as Medusa, in Medusa, Dare To Be Truthful, a spoof of Madonna's film Truth or Dare, earned her a Cable Ace Award and the Writer's Guild Award. Julie started her career at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, where she was attempting to become a serious actress. She was soon performing in clubs, where she was spotted by Lily Tomlin and given her first role in a movie: The Incredible Shrinking Woman.

Upon moving back to Los Angeles, she was a regular on Evening at the Improv, and was soon making frequent guest appearances on such hit shows as Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley and The Jeffersons. For the big screen, Julie wrote and starred in the cult film Earth Girls Are Easy. Other career highlights include her role as the gym teacher in the movie (and subsequent TV series) Clueless; starring on the FOX Sketch show The Edge; and guest-starring on the HBO series Six Feet Under as the bubbly Sissy Pasquese. She is also frequently seen as a commentator on E!'s various entertainment and top-100 specials.

Mimi is a piece of work, a Diva who considers herself a serious film director. As a two-time winner of the coveted "Vixen" award (a Lucite butt plug mounted on a pedestal), Mimi prides herself on directing adult movies with strong characters, interesting storylines and her trademark sex toys. She’s been in the adult entertainment business for over twenty-five years. She started as a stripper, did a few X-rated movies herself, then moved behind the scenes doing general office work and some light fluffing.

Although new trends in porn veer towards more hardcore imagery, Mimi insists on giving her films a lighter touch. Details are important to her: set-dec, costumes, script. Mimi knows her films are not watched for their niceties, but she still thinks one should have pride in one’s work.

Mimi is not a tyrannical director. She puts everyone at ease with her ladylike manners. True, the meaning of what she is saying is frequently quite crude, but she always says it in a non-confrontational way. Mimi tends to give direction in euphemisms: "That’s it. Play the pink oboe" or "Prune the rosebud." When she tells one of her porn actors to "go deeper," she means it both as a character tip and a physical direction.

Mimi is still beautiful. She carries herself with the ease of someone who expects to be looked at. Think of her as a maternal Morgan Fairchild. She has one daughter – not in the industry – who disapproves of her mother’s choices. The little ingrate lives in Germany. So Mimi treats her actors like her children. She’s very protective, and she’s just as likely to give them advice on their lives as on their scenes.
